The short answer: yes
Florida insurers offer wind mitigation discounts to homes with features that resist hurricane damage — and protected window and door openings are one of the biggest credits available. Install code-approved hurricane shutters on all your openings, document it properly, and your premium should drop. We will not quote you a percentage here, because the actual savings depend on your insurer, your policy, your home's construction, and how many mitigation features you have. But for many Orlando homeowners, the opening-protection credit is the single largest wind discount on the bill.
How the discount works
Florida law requires insurers to offer windstorm mitigation discounts. An inspector fills out the state's standard wind mitigation inspection form, checking off your home's hurricane-resistant features: roof shape and age, roof-to-wall connections, and — the part you care about — opening protection. Your insurer applies credits for each verified feature. Shutters earn the opening-protection credit; impact-rated windows and doors earn it too.
The all-or-nothing rule
This is the part most homeowners miss: to get the opening-protection credit, every opening must be protected — every window, every door, skylights, and the garage door. Protect 9 out of 10 and you generally get zero credit for openings. The logic is pure physics: one unprotected opening lets wind pressurize the house and blow the roof off. When you plan your shutter project, budget for the whole house, not most of it. Our cost guide helps you plan the full-house number.
What you need to qualify
- Code-approved products. Your shutters must carry Florida Product Approval or Miami-Dade NOA. The inspector verifies this. Our building code guide explains how to check.
- Permitted and inspected installation. The permit and final inspection sign-off prove the work was done to code. This is one more reason never to skip the permit — see our permits guide.
- A wind mitigation inspection. A qualified inspector documents your shutters (and your other mitigation features) on the state form. Many home inspectors offer this as a standalone service for a modest fee.
- Paperwork in one folder. Product approval numbers, the permit card, the inspection sign-off, and the wind mitigation form. Hand copies to your insurance agent and keep your own set.
What affects how much you save
Your insurer's rate plan. Every company weights credits differently. It pays to shop your policy after the shutters are in — some insurers compete harder for mitigated homes.
Your other features. A newer hip roof with strong roof-to-wall connections plus protected openings stacks multiple credits. Shutters are one piece of the mitigation picture.
Your home's risk profile. Construction type, age, and location all feed the final number. There is no single discount percentage we can promise — anyone who guarantees you a number before seeing your policy is guessing.
Timing: get the inspection right after install
Schedule the wind mitigation inspection as soon as your shutters pass final inspection. Send the form to your agent immediately — discounts generally apply going forward, so every month you wait is money left on the table. If you already have shutters but never got the inspection, it is not too late: get inspected now and claim the credit.
Beyond the discount: the claim you never file
The premium savings are nice, but the bigger insurance win is avoiding a claim entirely. A home with intact openings usually rides out a storm with minor damage; a home with broken windows can suffer catastrophic interior and roof damage. Fewer claims also protect you from non-renewal headaches in Florida's tough insurance market.
